Time A Telling Tale
Fill in your action-filled day with Time…. ……Learn to read time all the time!
The concept of time is not very easy for children to grasp. A sense of time is gained gradually during the process of living through time-spans marked by events. As children experience the world of people and things, their concept of time becomes integrated into their everyday lives, as well as into their vocabularies.
Teaching Time
Children should never be taught how to ‘tell the time’ before they are ready. They need to know a lot before they can read a clock: the numbers 1 to 12; which hand is the minute hand, which is the hour hand; how to count in fives, both backwards and forwards; parts of circle –half and quarters; how an hour divides into twelve equal pieces. The more one tries to hurry this skill, the more confused children will be. This doesn’t mean that one can’t help their development towards that skill. Attention should be on getting them familiar with time and the language that we use for time. One can do this by pointing out clocks and watches, telling them the time:
Learn to read time really quick with this puzzle set
Day events in sequence
This is a five-piece jigsaw puzzle set of 24 familiar daily scenarios serving as a one-of-its-kind educational puzzle game for the child to learn the concept and how to read the time. The five pictures reveal: the trajectory of the sun and moon during night and day, the analog clock, the daily events centered around the child and the family, the digital time and the 24 hour clock time.
Play and learn to read Time
The day’s event centering on child and family are portrayed in a continuous picture sequence which the child connects with very well.
The pictures comprise the center pieces and also the main activity theme of the puzzle.
In fact, sequencing the pictures relives the day’s event in the child’s life. This can be taken up first wherein the concepts of before and after as a complete daily cycle are revealed to the child.
To help in forming the picture sequence, the parent can lead the child in narrating the day’s events as a story-line. The cycle of Night and Day as also the day’s routine can be further elucidated by first making the 24 picture piece sequence and then taking out the first piece and then joining it to the last (there is a common jig to all the pieces) and continuing with the next pieces (2nd and 3rd and so on…)
Understanding Time in a stepwise manner with the puzzle set
The passage of time as a daily routine
This puzzle activity can even be taught to a four year old by the parent.
To make it easier and even more lucid, the first pieces of each jigsaw puzzle set which shows the sun’s trajectory and also the moon and stars as a night sky projection are linked in sequence. The sunrise from over the hills up to midday is done first followed by the movement towards sunset over the horizon of the high rise buildings.
After understanding the sequence these are connected with the appropriate center picture puzzle pieces to form 24 paired sets. This is rendered facile for the child as each puzzle set is colour coded by a horizontal colour strip at the top of each piece. The child has to match the colour to make the 24 pairs of puzzle sets which shows the day events in sequence.
After the child is well versed with the correct sequence of the day’s events, it is time to bring in the analog clock pieces into the puzzle play. The child can first collect all the pieces depicting the clock face. They need to be first arranged in the right sequence. At this age most children know the number 1-20 and quite a few are familiar also with 1-50 or 100.
The analog clock sequence jigsaw pieces can now be connected to the appropriate pieces showing different positions of the sun and moon.
This is again done by matching the colour strip at the top of each piece. These matched pairs will be quite an eye-opener as they learn and connect about passage of time as daily routine comprising of sunrise and sunset and about the night sky scenario.
Analog and Digital
Connect analog time with the digital clock and map the events
The understanding of time is taken to the next high by linking time with the digital clock. All the pieces which show the digital clock (coloured) with time as indicated by numbers and showing the notation AM and PM are first selected. They are then separated as AM (11 pieces) and PM (13 pieces). Both the sets are arranged in sequence after considering the first number depicted on the puzzle piece (this shows the hour hand).
They need to know something more before they can attempt to read a clock: that 60 minutes elapse before an hour passes: how many hours of daylight and how many hours in the night; what is midday and midnight with reference to the clock; and most important – that when the minute hand completes one rotation of the clock face (60 minutes), the hour hand covers just 1 number from 1to 2 or from 2-3 and so on for all the hours up to 12.
Having grasped these elementary but very important concepts for understanding time, now the child can venture boldly into the learning of reading time by matching the analog clock pieces with the digital time pieces.
Once the child enjoys the achievement it is important for it to correlate the digital display reading with the clock face and understand it. As time progresses, the child will be able to read the time from the clock face without referring to the digital clock.
To make the understanding of time quite complete, it is also important to understand time as a 24 hour clock. This is made clear by using the 5th piece of the jigsaw puzzle which shows digital displays of the time from 0-24.
The time-matched picture puzzle set
Become a master of reading time
Now that the puzzle on time has been completely revealed, the child can arrange all the 5 pieces for the 24 different time sequences.
The parent can make the child a master of time by asking it to match any random piece – a clock face, with the 12 hour or 24 hour clock or even vice versa.
