Story It!

Put students into pairs or groups of 2-6. Works best with higher-level learners such as 2nd or 3rd grade English and up.Pass out 2-5 cards to each student (depending on the level or age group) (use 5 cards for 2 players). They may look at their cards. You may pre-teach “Introduction, Body, and Conclusion” as English language arts concepts before this activity. One student begins by starting the introduction to the story. Example: “go through” may be on the card they select. They could say “Martin the dolphin was going through the ocean one day…”The next player uses a card with “eat out” and adds “and he thought about where their family would eat out for dinner.”Each player keeps adding to the story until all the cards have been used. Players may change the verb tense to fit the story.Students can then retell the story for listening and speaking practice and/or write their story with an introduction, body, and conclusion.Students can give their story to the instructor for correction. The teacher may provide constructive feedback and have the students rewrite the story. For a faster version with listening and speaking in larger groups (6-15 students), pass out 1 card to each person. Then make one large story as a group.*You may add the red Phrase It red topic dice to spark themes or categories for stories. The Phrase It 2 Expansion Game may be used as well.
