The Goal of the Game

The goal of chess game is to maneuver your pieces in an effort to remove your opponent’s pieces and ultimately capture his or her King. This may sound easy, but keep in mind that the other player has the exact same goal. A heavy focus on your offensive game can lead to massive holes in your defense. A rigid focus on defense may reduce your chances of launching a meaningful attack. Though chess is a game of logic, structured by hard and fast rules, there is also an art to forcing a “checkmate” on your opponent (a win). This art is in the collective movement of pieces, and how you use their individual strengths collectively to force a win.

Chessmen

The King and Queen

The two central squares of the closest rank are occupied by the King and Queen. The Queen is placed on the square matching her color, and the King occupies the square of the opposite color.

The Rook, Bishop and Knight

The Rooks are placed on the leftmost and rightmost squares, followed by the Knights on the spaces directly next to them, then Bishops, after the Knights.

The Pawn

Each player begins the game with eight Pawns placed along their second rank.

Chess Board There are 64 squares (8 x 8) on a standard chessboard. The lighter-colored squares are called “white” or “light” squares. The darker-colored squares are called “dark” or “black” squares. The vertical rows are called files (a – h).

Opening

The opening is the beginning of a game. Each side develops their pieces, preparing for skirmishes during the middle game. Development occurs when a passive piece is made more active. Because the strongest pieces begin behind Pawns, they have limited mobility, and are unable to attack, or threaten a significant amount of spaces.

Middle Game

The middle game begins after each player develops their pieces. The middle game is arguably the most difficult part of the game to learn. Each player develops their own strategy in the opening stage, and attempts to execute it while keeping the opponent at bay. Because each side has developed their pieces, it can be overwhelming to track each square threatened by an opponent’s forces. Many chess games have been won, and lost, in the middle game.

Endgame

The endgame begins when the Kings join the fight. During the fairly populated middle game, Pawns and pieces are exchanged back and forth such that by the endgame, the battlefield is reduced to a few pieces on each side. The King is much stronger on a less populated battlefield, and often plays a crucial role in determining whether a player wins or loses.
